Could my child be in the wrong grade? We have 4 children who entered school. 2 of them, we either held back or replaced them to give them an extra chane. It had nothing to do with economics or educational support. As an elementary counselor, I was on top of every thing with our kids, and it was easy to see our oldest was struggling. Call it the failure to thrive syndrome. (FTS) What does that mean?
Normal students from normal families should thrive in school. That means that the child should be doing as well as half of the students or more. Thus, a child from a middle class family should not be having trouble in school. Sadly, struggling should be reduced to the realm of the learning disabled child, students from low achieving homes, or students who come from at risk homes. If the above doesn't describe our child, then we need to look elsewhere for the problem.
Our oldest was replaced from 2nd to 1st, and is now a college graduate. If you are interested in more information, you can email me at bluesharp94@hotmail.com. I will be adding more to this as time moves on, so check back. I was called the St Paul of Developmental Placement in our state, and an article in the Oklahoma Observer, ended up bringing about changes to all incoming kindergarten. It's actually very compelling when we start putting THE PUZZLE PIECES together, that leads us to the problems, a significant percentage of our students, have, and the reducible response we can take that will solve the problem.
